Short Background:
Born to Yujleda's healer, Vania was raised to be a healer herself, a future that she was content with until one fateful day when a group of Nomadic Grounders decided to attack their village. At a young age of 7, she witnessed cruelty and a great disregard for human life as her parents were brutally attacked and killed. She watched helplessly as they fell, knowing that there was nothing she or anyone could do to save them. She would have been killed herself were it not for Atla who saved her life. From then on, she decided to leave the life she had been taught to live and began training as a warrior. Atla eventually took her as her Second.

It was 3 years later that they found out that she was a Nightblood and sent to Polis to train for the Conclave. She trained everyday with 6 other novitiates, all hoping to one day ascend as the Commander.

Short Background:
Etro was orphaned at a young age because of a border war between Trishanakru and Azgeda. Due to his unprecedented competence with the sword and hand-to-hand combat despite having no training, he was taken in by the Ice Nation king, Theo, as his second. While then King was detached from all his subjects, he shared a close relationship with Etro, even said to rival the King's relationship with his own daughter Nia and her young son, Roan.

Nia, despising anyone that would usurp the throne from her, convinced her father that the only way for Etro to prove his worth was to send Etro to assassinate the Commander's novitiates. She then proposed to the King that once the Nightbloods were eliminated, it would be easy to kill the Commander and end their line permanently. Hungry for power, the King agreed and sent Etro on this fool's mission.
